Just finished watching the third instalment in the highly successful Championship Series presented by CMD Founder & Creative Monkey Rodney King. To cut to the chase, once again, this DVD delivers an awesome blend of technique, application and insight.

Like a lot of the pre-ordered DVDs, mine initially went missing but Rodney very kindly resent it and this second copy arrived very quickly. (Incidentally, if you spot a postal worker with a market stall full of CM DVDs, let us know ;) . )

One of the great strengths of the Championship Series DVDs is their blend of technical specifics, conceptual ideas, and practical examples. Volume 3 continues this excellent approach with Rodney presenting the material straight to camera, presenting all the necessary details and specifics; this is then interspersed with clips of drilling and sparring, letting you see how everything looks under pressure. I really like this approach, as it lets you see the big picture as well as individual techniques.

While Championship Series Vol 1 looked at the CM1 game and Vol 2 explored taking the fight to the opponent with CM2, Vol 3 explores the close in tactics of CM3. For those of you not in the loop with Crazy Monkey Defense lingo, CM3 deals with both attached and unattached clinch – those situations where you and your opponent are so close that you are touching and/ or grabbing each other.

After some insightful commentaries from Rodney on various aspects of the martial arts – including a great section on perfection versus functionality – the DVD begins by exploring tactics for taking advantage of the unattached clinch. Note that this really builds on the material presented in Volumes 1 & 2, so make sure you get the fundamentals of this down before diving into CM3.

The bulk of the DVD is then taken up with exploring the attached clinch. Though there are lots of DVDs out there that deal with clinch from the perspective of neck ties and wrestling positions (including some great CMD ones), Championship Series Vol 3 is really unique in exploring the area Crazy Monkeys refer to as Straight Jacket Clinch (SJC).

Despite sometimes being called ‘dirty boxing’ you will not see the techniques currently presented under this name by wrestlers-turned-mma’ers; rather, SJC is all about tying up your opponent to create openings. This DVD shows how to use these openings to deliver strikes but, as Rodney points outs, with a bit of playing around you can easily use these opportunities to deliver knees, take-downs or move into one of the other clinch sub-games such as underhooks and neck ties.

This is the first time this material has been explored in depth outside of CMD Trainer’s Clinics, the odd seminar, and CMD Gyms & Studios, and I never get tired of exploring this awesome area of the CM game. If you’ve already checked out Championship Series Volumes 1 & 2, this is next step in creating a complete martial arts game – if you haven’t, you’ll still find Volume 3 interesting and insightful, though you may want to come back to it after getting a solid grip on CM1 & CM2.

A great addition to a great series.

I finaly had a chance to watch CM3, the latest edition to a great series. I just can’t say enough good things about it. I try to be a pragmatic guy and this DVD hits the mark, not just by teaching only high percentage moves but in pairing the number of moves down. A lower number of high value options increases your ability to react effectively under pressure. This vid is fantastic and has a permanent home in my collection___ I can hardly wait for my sparring partner. Thanks again Rodney.
